Caring for a New Piercing

Piercing is a safe procedure when carried out by a licensed practitioner. Following proper hygiene practices reduces the risk of infection.

  1. Always wash your hands and dry them thoroughly with a clean towel or kitchen roll before touching the area around the piercing.
  2. Avoid fiddling with the area and do not turn the piercing.
  3. If a crust develops, do not remove it – it protects the piercing.
  4. The piercing may bleed initially and for a few days. It may also be tender, itchy, or bruised for several weeks.
  5. Keep the piercing clean by gently applying saline solution twice a day, preferably after washing or bathing.
  6. Submerge the area in a bowl of saline solution (1/4 teaspoon sea salt per egg cup of warm water) for a few minutes. Alternatively, use a clean cloth or gauze soaked in saline as a warm compress. Sterile saline solution is also available in some stores.
  7. Use a cotton bud or clean gauze to gently clean the entry and exit points of the piercing after softening any discharge.
  8. Once clean, gently move the jewellery to allow warm water to flow through the piercing.
  9. Carefully dry the area with fresh kitchen roll. Never use a bath towel.
